The secret that I have found to getting good lightning photos is to get right in the path of a very strong concentrated storm (one that has a lightning strike at least every 30 seconds in a relatively small area), have the camera on a tripod, set it to a 15 to 30 second exposure. The hard part is to learn when to stop, for I have put myself in dangerous situations trying to get that "one final great shot". I love doing lightning photography though I don't know that I would really recommend it to anyone.

I set the lens to infinity and the aperture as high as it will go (depending on the lens). One of the secrets I found is to get as close as possible to the lightning so I do not need to zoom in at all. Not very safe but quite effective
